The Eastern Cape of South Africa — particularly the Karoo — produces some of the world's finest mohair due to the dry climate and pasture conditions. The fibre is known for its silky lustre, warmth, durability and hypoallergenic properties. Kid mohair: fibre from the first or second shearing of a young Angora goat. It is the finest, softest grade — lighter and more delicate than adult mohair. Brushed mohair: mechanically brushed to raise the fibre into a halo texture, creating a voluminous, cloud-like appearance popular for outerwear. ## Sustainability & Ethics - All mohair is locally sourced from Eastern Cape Angora goat farms - Angora goats are shorn twice yearly — no animals are harmed - Eco-sensitive production methods throughout - No synthetic fibres used in core product range - Community employment: products finished by women of the Alicedale area - Biodegradable natural fibre — no microplastic shedding - Heirloom philosophy: buy less, buy better, keep for generations ## Our Story 1967 — Jan Paul Barnard moves to Alicedale and starts the first mohair factory. Early production used hand looms. Hand-spun and hand-dyed yarns created mohair curtains, cushions and blankets for local and international markets. Jan Paul's wife, Elsa (from Germany, trained fashion designer), designed the original collections including carpets, jerseys, knitting yarns and blankets. Machinery was later introduced to expand production possibilities. Today — The second generation has taken over, continuing the tradition of crafting quality heirloom mohair products. International delivery now available via Aramex. ## Pages - Home: https://barnardmohair.com/ - About Us: https://barnardmohair.com/about-us/ - Catalogue / Shop: https://barnardmohair.com/shop-default/ - Blankets: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/blankets-2/ - Travel Blankets: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/blankets-2/travel-blanket/ - Jackets: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/jackets/ - Tunic Jackets: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/jackets/peasant-tunic-coat/ - Talisman Jackets: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/jackets/talisman-jacket/ - Kid Mohair Scarves: https://barnardmohair.com/product-category/kid-mohair-scarves/ - Care Guide: https://barnardmohair.com/care-guide/ - Wholesale & Trade: https://barnardmohair.com/wholesale-and-trade/ - Factory Visits: https://barnardmohair.com/factory-visits/ - Authorised Retailers: https://barnardmohair.com/barnard-mohair-retailers - Journal / Media: https://barnardmohair.com/journal/ - Contact: https://barnardmohair.com/contact/ - Order Tracking: https://barnardmohair.com/shop-info/order-tracking/ ## Caring for Mohair Hand wash in cool to lukewarm water with a mild wool detergent.
